What is carrier oil?
A carrier oil is generally a vegetable-based oil used in beauty, skincare, and hair care products, and to dilute essential oils.
Cold-pressing from nuts and seeds and maceration in some oil like olive oil are the two main methods of producing carrier oils. Although those obtained by cold pressing are preferred.
All carrier oils should be kept cool, and away from strong light, to preserve benefits.
Why to Use Carrier Oils?
Since essential oils are far more powerful than any herb, it is important to use caution when applying the oils to the skin.
Diluting essential oils is a critical safety practice when using essential oils.
Carrier oil is used to dilute essential oils and absolutes before they are applied to the skin in massage and aromatherapy. They are so named because they carry the essential oil onto the skin.
How to Use Carrier Oils
There is a range of different carrier oils, each with various therapeutic properties. Choosing a carrier oil and essential oil will depend on the area being massaged, the presenting conditions and the client’s sensitivity and requirements.
All types of Carrier Oils
For massage, viscosity is a major consideration; for example, the grape seed oil is typically very thin, while olive oil is much thicker. Sunflower, sweet almond and grape seed oils have viscosities midway between these extremes. Carrier oils can be easily blended to combine their properties of viscosity, acceptability, lubrication, absorption, aroma and so forth.
The following list includes popular carrier oils used to dilute essential oils for aromatherapy, massage, and skincare.
